Current thinking on where to leave backpacks for HD Hike?

Postby dgilman » Tue Jul 25, 2017 11:26 am

As you may know from another thread, my wife and I will be backpacking for 5 days, ending with HD on the last day.

We plan to camp above the JMX x CR junction the night before HD and exit via Happy Isles.

I'm curious on the current thinking for where to leave our large bags. I thought I read that leaving them unattended is a bad idea, but obviously don't want to trek up the cables with them. We could leave them at the campsite and break camp when we're done, but that seems like a lot of backtracking. I figure we'll use a small backpack for the climb itself.

Best practices for this?

Thank you!

There are usually piles of gear around the intersection of the JMT and the trail to Half Dome.

Unless you take the shortcut (over the edge of Half Dome :) ), you'll pass that point on your way back anyway.

Make sure any food is in a bear canister. I usually make sure my bear canister is under something heavy to discourage bears and away from my pack so I don't loose everything if a bear does go after my food.
