Hello,
My friends and I are planning a 5 day trip in early august. We came up with a route through the southern area of Yosemite that starts at the Quartz Entry Point and has us camping at Chain Of Lakes, one of the Ottoway Lakes, along the Illilouette, around Buena Vista Peak, at Crescent Lake and then back out throught Quartz.

We are first-timers and hoping some of you veterans can give us some advice. Does this loop sound reasonable for a 5 night trip? Are there any areas along the route that we shouldn't miss? Any good fishing spots in the area that you want to give up? One thought we had was to straighten the loop out and shuttle back to Quartz if that would allow us to experience a greater variety of nature. Any advice is greatly appreciated

I was on the booking website this morning, and saw all the sites in the Valley disappear within 4 minutes, at least for the dates I was searching (in early August). Fortunately I was looking for a site in Tuolumne and got one, but I couldn't help but notice how fast the Valley sites went.

It makes it really hard for anyone who isn't clued in to the system---and even if you are it seems hit or miss.

Are people still selling them on eBay, or has the effort to put a stop to that succeeded?

Also search on this site and someone asked about Nelson to Emerick.

The "best" route... hmm... depends what you mean by best.

I guess if I had only one chance to do it I would go:
-Sunrise HSC
-Trail then up to Echo Lake
-Up and over Matthes Crest on the North Side
-Down to Matthes Lake
-East Over to Echo Creek
-Nelson Lake
-Reymann Lake
-East to Trail then over Tuol Pass to Vog.

You can also get from Echo L. to Matthes L. by going S. of
Matthes Crest. The N. side is much higher climb but just
spectacular.
Matthes Crest is easily one of my favorite features in the park.

So what is "best"?

Are you doing this intending to stay at the High Sierra Camps and eat there as well, or as a self sufficient backpacker? If you make reservations to do all or part of the HSC loop and stay in the tents there, the permit is included. If you go as a self sufficient backpacker apply for the permit for the starting trailhead of your choice. If you camp close to the HS Camps, there is a backpacker campground at each camp that you will need to camp at. Other than that, you are free to practice dispersed backcountry camping, if you follow the regulations.
from my understanding you only need one permit if it is a continuous trip and you do not need a special permit to camp outside of the high sierra camps.

Hi! We are planning a backpacking trip in Yosemite in September. I am a little confused about the High Sierra Camp loop regulations. Can we do the whole loop with a permit for a single trail head even though the loop requires crossing the Tioga Road and thus using more than one trail head? If we do not have permits for the High Sierra Camps, do we need special permits for the backpacking camps?

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Yep--in fact a lot of use trails are marked with a carabiner, indicating that they lead to a key rock climbing route.

There is a fantastic spot at Boothe...right off the "beach" there and right beneath a large bluff. Almost too nice though. Down towards the southern tip of Boothe is a very nice spot that overlooks all of boothe and down along the edge of Rafferty Peak going to the other direction.

Bernice has a couple of small spots on the western edge. they're grouped together and offer some shade and seclusion. Bernice is like nothing I've ever seen.

If you've got the time or extra energy, Babcock has a great spot with a large fire ring.

A lot of stuff is still snowbound until Memorial Day or so, so that limits your choices. Personally, I would focus on Yosemite and skip Sequoia as the trails to the Sequoia trees are under snow and the elevation higher. Sequoia's nice, but it's a lot of driving to try and cover both. In Yosemite, visit the Valley--it is low, so not as snowbound, has lots of views and waterfalls, and has lodging and restaurants.

I would spend at least 2 full days there--maybe one to see the Valley and the other to see the Sequoia trees in Yosemite.

There's Giant Sequoia Trees in Yosemite at Mariposa Grove (you have to walk a couple miles in though on a closed road). The easiest Sequoia Trees to see in Yosemite are at the Tuolumne Grove just north of Crane Flat. From Yosemite Valley take Big Oak Flat Rd to the gas station at Crane Flat, turn on to Tioga Road (120 east) and drive about 1/2 mile to a parking lot on the left with bathrooms. It's just before the Yosemite Institute building. Park and drive on the closed Old Big Oak Flat Road. You'll see Giant Sequoias after walking 1/4 mile or so.

Actually it's easy to miss if you don't know it's there, since Northside Drive is one way (westbound) and the view is eastbound. If you know what you're looking for, or have a passenger looking behind, it's easier to spot. It's a turnout after passing El Capitan, but before the Highway 41/140 split. The turnout is on the left, above the Merced River bank.
