• Medley's Complete Guidebook to Yosemite National Park (1998) Good overall guide to the park. Get this if you're going to buy one book on Yosemite.

• Huggens's All Roads Lead to Yosemite: Where to Stay & Play in & Near the Park (1999) Good local guide concentrating on areas surrounding the park—especially lodging.

• Ditton's Yosemite Road Guide Booklet keyed to roadside markers at points of interest along Yosemite's roads. Good for getting out of your car and seeing Yosemite.

• Insiders' Guide to Yosemite I haven't seen yet but, if it's as good as its other guidebooks, I have high hopes for it.

Hiking, Backpacking, Climbing, and Mountaineering

• Schaffer's Yosemite National Park: A Natural-History Guide to Yosemite and its Trails Best overall day-hike and backpacking guide with detailed trail descriptions and plenty of background information.
  NEW! 4th edition (June 1999).
• High Sierra Hiking Guide Series. Each guide covers the area of a 15' topographic map. It fits in your pocket and is an excellent guide to trails in the area for backpacking or hiking. Full-color, updated, durable map included.
• Yosemite: Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point and south to Wawona.
• Tuolumne Meadows: high country—Tuolumne Meadows and Lyell Canyon.
• Hetch Hetchy: backcountry north of Yosemite valley.
• One Best Hike: Yosemite's Half Dome (2007) by Rick Deutsch. Informative guide on a well-known landmark and popular trail to the summit.
• Snowshoe Trails of Yosemite (1999) by Michael C. White. "The" guide to snowshoe trails and routes in Yosemite.


• Tim Messick's Cross Country Skiing in Yosemite Describes ski tours of all levels in Yosemite.

R. J. Secor's The High Sierra: Peaks, Passes, and Trails (2009). The authorative referennce for various peaks in Yosemite and the Sierra. Good for backpackers too who want to know background information about the area and if a peak is accessible.

• Don Reid and Chris Falkenstein's Rock Climbs of Tuolumne Meadows Guide to a famous alpine area where climbers of varied skills may try a variety of climbs.
• Don Reid's Rock Climbing Yosemite Select Details climbing routes up Yosemite Valley's steep walls.
• Royal Robins, To Be Brave Autobiography by a Yosemite rock climbing legend

• Map and Guide to Yosemite Valley Includes roads, trails, and background information.
• Map and Guide to Wawona & Mariposa Grove Covers the giant sequoia grove.

• Wilson & Nicholas' Wildflowers of Yosemite Good general book for identifying Yosemite's spring wildflowers.
• Sorer, Usinger's, & Lukas Sierra Nevada Natural History Thorough book on all sorts of living creatures—including flowers, ferns, butterflies, mammals, insects, and geology.
• Huber's Geologic Story of Yosemite National Park The best general book on all that beautifully-shaped rock. Originally published as a USGS bulletin.

• Galen Rowell's The Vertical World of Yosemite by the famous rock-climber and photographer.

• Runte's Yosemite: The Embattled Wilderness Environmental history of the fight for Yosemite's Preservation
