Get this if you're going to buy one book on Yosemite.
Huggens's All Roads Lead to Yosemite: Where to Stay & Play in &
Near the Park (1999)
Good local guide concentrating on areas surrounding
the park—especially lodging.
Schaffer's Yosemite National Park:
A Natural-History Guide to Yosemite and its Trails
Best overall day-hike and backpacking guide with detailed
trail descriptions and plenty of background information.
Each guide covers the area of a 15' topographic map.
It fits in your pocket and is an excellent guide to trails
in the area for backpacking or hiking.
Full-color, updated, durable map included.
R. J. Secor's The High Sierra: Peaks, Passes, and Trails (2009). The authorative referennce for various peaks in Yosemite and the Sierra. Good for backpackers too who want to know background information about the area and if a peak is accessible.
Sorer, Usinger's, & Lukas Sierra Nevada Natural History
Thorough book on all sorts of living creatures—including flowers, ferns,
butterflies, mammals, insects, and geology.
Ansel Adams at 100 (2001)
This book accompanys the exhibit by the same name that is touring
the U.S. and Europe until 2003.
Curator John Szarkowski selected 114 Adams photographs that he
considers Adams' finest work. The selections emphasize artful early
prints of Adams' famous images, many from the 1940s.

This best selling book by Muir is based on a diary
he wrote as a young man — recording his first thoughts on Yosemite.
