The Valley to Wawona in one day

Postby Wawona1 » Tue Apr 20, 2010 5:42 pm

I want to run/hike from 4 mile to Wawona in one day. Has anyone done that? How far is that? Like 30 some miles...anyone know?

Which way you wanna go?

Up 4 Mile to Pohono thru McGurk and Westfall and out Alder Creek is
only about 25 miles. After Taft it's nearly all flat and downhill.
Wouldn't even have to run to finish that in a day in all daylight.

A more aggressive option is up 4 Mile then down Panorama and
back up Buena Vista and out Chilnualna. Let's call that 30 and
a good mile climb up at least. If you go early and streams are
screaming you best go the north leg to avoid one Chil xing.
Also, beyond Ill falls there are no bridges on Ill or it's tributaries.
Spec. I'd be leary of the feeder into Ill north of the Mono Mdw. trail.

They both have their pros and cons. Scenery wise and difficulty.

Have fun

O... no I haven't done this... I do this crazy crap in the Bay Area...
I like to stay overnight in the wilderness when in the Sierra. :)

I'd like to go from the Valley to Wawona. I'd like to avoid any water crossings if possible. Thanks!

Uh... Two options there above. Valley to Wawona.

Option 1 has the least creek crossings... and those crossings
should not be difficult nearly any time of the year.
Meadow crossings may be gooshy... but you can skirt around them
if needed...
Worse case turn around and head to GP road and hitch hike.
4 Mile Tr. prob. won't be open until end of May timeframe.

the TH says Yosemite Valley 24.6 Miles.

So, 24.8 plus the 4 miles at 4 mile would make for just under 30. Cool. Thanks!

Ok. Got it now. I'm going to run the Boston in 2013 and am looking at loooong day hikes/runs for each summer to keep me in shape. I've got plans to run the valley loop, 13 miles (ish) I think, a few times this summer as well. Thanks again for the info, and if you ever want to do some long distance stuff this summer, hollar, I'll be in Wawona til November.
