Getting a first come wilderness permit

Postby rodneyace » Tue Apr 27, 2010 2:31 pm

What are the chances of getting a first come permit for a Happy Isles Sunrise Merced Lake (pass through). Im trying to arrive in mid June on a weekday and receive the permit for that day if not the following day. Im aware that the wilderness center opens at 9 A.M so should i plan on getting there early? Any advice would help thanks alot

I never hike that way in mid June. From what I know you pretty
much have to burn a day to get a permit. I've heard people
getting in line at about 4am. No thanks for me.
I'm just awaking in the Bay Area then to start the drive up...
:)
Good luck

Sorry. Nothing wrong with that area other than it's super busy.
Hard to get permits for, that's all.

walk up permits

If you're serious about getting permits from HI, be there at 5 am the day before your trip with your sleeping bag and pad and get in line. I've brought my stove and cups and made coffee for people. I've gotten there at 5 and been 3rd in line with the first person arriving at 2! Good luck.

Also if you are traveling alone you have a better chance. I have gotten one every time when I was traveling solo. I didn't wait in line, showed up around 8 or 9 each time. It all depends on who is going that day. Also look for reservation cancellations.
