for glacier pt > illilouette - will be starting July 19 - spending 6 nights and exiting at happy isles.

the car retrieval hike will be interesting. it has seriously amped up my motivation for training. i suppose if i am too gassed there is always the bus.

One problem I did not anticipate, though, is the lack of a backpackers' campground at glacier point. Hoping the sage posters here can offer some suggestions. Looks like Wawona campground is full, as is the hotel.

One option might be the backpacker campground in the valley, and starting the day with the bus to glacier point. I guess I'm not thrilled with the thought of getting on the trail later in the morning or afternoon, since with kids we don't want to have a forced march on the first day. Where do folks starting at GP normally camp?

Why not stay somewhere outside Yosemite the first night, then drive very early to GP? Stay in Oakhurst, El Portal, Midpines, etc. Not sure about leaving you car for 6 days at GP, however. I have left it over night, and taken the bus back in the AM to retrieve it. I would call the park and ask about 6 days.

It probably wouldn't be too bad to start midday, since the Panorama Trail to Illilouette is pretty short and all downhill (I could see it taking maybe 3 hours if you take it really slow and stop a lot for the spectacular views on the trail).
