Recent snow/trail conditions for North and South Rim

Postby bwg999 » Tue Jun 01, 2010 11:40 pm

I am considering a trip as early as this weekend and would greatly appreciate any info on recent conditions on any/all of the following trails. Specifically does one need special equipment (snowshoes? ice axe?) or are a good pair of boots and trekking poles sufficient with careful hiking? any risky creek crossings?

1. Valley to Upper Yosemite Falls? add to Yosemite Point and Eagle Peak?
2. Happy Isles to Glacier Point via Panorama Trail?
3. Glacier Point Road to Taft Point & Fissures and Sentinel Dome?
4. Pohono Trail from Tunnel View to GP?
5. Four Mile Trail from valley to GP? The website says it is closed at Union Point, any guess when it will open up to GP?

Thanks much in advance. I'm hoping to see waterfalls when flow is higher than normal.

They are probably doing a decent job of updating the wilderness conditions now that more people are going.
Probably. Perhaps.

Here's my guess on it. (I was on Pohono 2 weekends ago)

1. Yose Pt. - no snow no problem
Eagle Pk. - EP Mdws gonna be swampy
2. Pan Trail to GP - No Snow
note on this one - you have to get all the way to Bridalveil now if overnighting
I was told even when the road was closed that I had to do that
since they were gonna be in the area.
3. There was 4 ft of snow 2 weekends ago. So I'd still expect over 2 ft.
4. Miles and miles o snow
5. They are super duper pessimistic on this trail. I know people
went up and down it 2 weekends ago. Ok. I don't know they made it or
not but one guy I talked to at least had crampons.

Have fun

Bridalveil is on Panorama now?

:?

So they want you not to camp between Bridalveil on Pohono and LYV? Long hike. Wow.

Almost, When I got my permit 2 weekends ago the guy said
I could not camp anywhere in the greyed out area on the
Nat. Geo trail map.
The road was still closed. I said "what! I'm not camping AT Glacier Pt."

They expect you to take two days to get there. Day 1 into Ill out of greyed
area.... day 2 ... bridalveil.

Yeah, that's what everyone tells me. No camp til Bridalveil on the Pohono.

I was just a little confused by the mention in the bullet point with the Panorama trail. :( Should not read before coffee I suppose.

The trail to Upper Yose Falls is clear and dry all the way to the top.

To Yose Point, the trail is clear to about 6800 ft. You'll run accros some snow patches to the point but no issues at all.

Eagle Peak is another story! Pretty muddy to the junction. Once you hit the junction, 100% snow coverage to the EP spur trail. Some post holing from the junction to the spur trail. Lot's of footprints zigzagging on the snow with no distinct trail markers. We hiked from west of EP to U Yose Falls without snowshoes. They would be helpful if you have some.
