Are dogs permitted up Mt. Dana?

Postby Akichow » Sun Jul 18, 2010 10:06 pm

I understand that Mt. Dana straddles Yosemite (no dogs allowed) and Inyo National Forest (dogs allowed). Does anyone know whether dogs are permitted on the trail up Dana leaving from near the park entrance? Though I gather that "trail" is a bit of a misnomer as you get to higher elevations.

My leashed dog and I practice leave-no-trace principles and we're looking for a real leg-stretcher near Tioga Pass. I've done Bennettsville and environs, as well as hikes in the 20 lakes basin, though they'd be good for a repeat if need be.

I saw three dogs during my Mt. Dana hike.
I doubt that they were happy with the Mt. Dana scree. :(

Just because you saw dogs doesn't mean they are permitted.

Please don't take your poochy on trails in Yosemite.
Please. They are not allowed. Sorry.

I can't tell you how many dogs I've seen atop Nevada Falls.

I appreciate the fact that dogs are not allowed in Yosemite Wilderness.
It's one of the reasons that I prefer Yose Wilderness to the other
Wilderness areas. Please respect the rules and keep poochy off
the trails. It's plainly marked.

Yeah, you may not agree with it. But those are the rules.

There were dogs at 1000 Island earlier this year and we heard
coyotes during the early morning. Yet another reason we feel
no dogs in the wilderness is the way it should be.

Yes, as my original post reflected, I am familiar with the Yosemite-no-dogs-on-trail policy and have no quarrel with it. I posted because I want to comply with it. However, Dana is on the boundary with Yosemite, and dogs are permitted in the national forest, and it wasn't clear to me whether the trail was in Yosemite or the national forest. I have since purchased expensive topo maps from REI and determined that, to do Dana the way I want to do it, you do go into Yosemite. Therefore, I will not be doing in Dana with my dog.

No problem.
I guess I could have been more specific and told
you that the trail from the Tioga entrance to the top of Mt. Dana
is nearly entirely inside the park.

No worries. Came up with some good hikes in Inyo. Dana will wait for another day when the pup stays home.

Thanks Akichow. You seem reasonable when it comes to your dog and Yosemite rules. Some dog owners are not (as some members of any group are that are prohibited from doing something).

I like dogs when I am visiting someone at their farm or home and the dog is well behaved and doesn't have to smell my privates or jump on me or threaten to bite me; but for me, they completely ruin the wilderness experience. I feel the same way about bikes, horses....
