Ride from Valley to Tuolumne meadows 10/8 or10/9

Postby kjburg » Wed Oct 06, 2010 3:40 pm

Hi,

Our party of two is arriving Friday morning 10/8, and wanted to spend the first day around the valley then start Saturday hiking from Sunrise Lakes trailhead to the Valley.

With no buses running, how hard would it be to find a ride Saturday morning, or Friday late morning/afternoon up to Sunrise Lakes trail head? We'd generously compensate our driver, and we'd be clean b/c it's before the real hiking started.

Thanks,

Ken

Well, snow closed the pass. It might reopen by the time you want to leave if the snow melts that fast. If it does, you'll want someone with chains to take you up... and to be ready for similar conditions if it snows again while you're hiking.

snow closure

Postby kjburg » Wed Oct 06, 2010 6:45 pm

Thanks, I talked to the ranger today who seemed confident it would open soon as long as no more storms came along - weather doesn't call for anything too serious.

I also read on Yosemite.blog that it was rain and rocks that forced the closure, not the snow accumulation, which would be nice. We're prepped for cold junky weather, we were snowshoeing in Yosemite last year - now that's some snow and cold.

Worse comes to worse, we're in an all-wheel drive car and we own chains, we'll just do an out and back from the meadows and drive ourselves there, but a point to point hike is so much more appealing.

*** Update 10/7/2010 1:29PM PST - looks like Hwy 120 is open again, 1/2 the problem of getting from Valley to Sunrise trailhead - over.... as for the ride, hoping to catch one with someone from Camp 4 or something.
