Tuolumne June trip and snow

Postby mbaze » Thu May 07, 2015 11:26 am

Well, we're all geared up for a June 2-6 trip on the Lyell Fork out of Tuolumne Meadows. And then today...a snowstorm. Anybody want to take a stab at guessing whether we'll be snow camping at that date? I'm wondering whether we should come up with an alternative trip for those dates.

What's the best way to get info on Tuolumne ground conditions?

Yay, snow for water. Boo, snow for backpacking.

Calling the park before you go, or checking the website - which is sometimes slow to be updated, but usually accurate on road closures and the like.

Spring snow generally doesn't stay around long. What little is sticking today may be gone by next week.

There are 2 weather stations in TM and one at Dana Mdw. See http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cgi-progs/queryF?s=TUM , http://famtest.nwcg.gov/roman/cgi-bin/m ... ?stn=TUMC1, and http://famtest.nwcg.gov/roman/cgi-bin/m ... ?stn=TIOC1 . Each of those sites reports snow depth, but be warned that they are not terribly accurate especially if levels are near zero. For example, TIOC1 is getting some weird 195 inch values 3 times today.

I'm unaware of any working web cams in the TM area, so its hard to get a feel for conditions remotely. +1 on calling.

Those are great, Dave. Some conflicting data, but enough to get a sense of what's going on. Thanks!
