Mapped photos of Yosemite

Postby orion » Fri Feb 05, 2010 2:07 pm

I found this web site last year where you can post and map out your photos of Yosemite (or anywhere) which later posts the vista photos on google earth. It used to be a european (spanish, I think) website, and at some point google bought them out.

http://www.panoramio.com

here are some photos I put up:

It's is a pretty good resource for checking out places you have yet to go to get a feel for what they are like.

Yup. I knew who you were from Google Smurf.

Here's a few I shoved up there with chick-on in it:

I kinda gave up putting up photos after they didn't take a couple
and then leave ones which are wrongly placed.
(why didn't they take White Mtn??. Flora? Spotted?
Why didn't they take "Billy Dome"... which is correctly placed
unlike the photo they have there)

as far as i know, they take vista photos, so long as there aren't any people in it, and it takes a few weeks to get google earth designation. it is up to the poster to be accurate about the location and your discretion to put it where it was taken from or what it is a picture of.

say, is my picture of volunteer peak actually volunteer peak? I took that photo long ago..

The one with the unnamed lake in front? That was taken on a trip to Rock Island Lake. It looked like you could get down to Benson from there, but looks can be deceiving. One of a thousand hikes left to be done.

I'm looking forward to exploring the south side of Benson and the Rodgers lake area this summer. The volcanic outcropping east of Rodgers looks like pretty interesting terrain. I wonder if there's a way down into the Virginia there that can get you to the Tuolumne. I doubt too many people venture into that country.

Yeah, Rock Island is very nice. Kinda kicking myself for not
going up Bath Mtn. when we xcountried from Snow to
Smedberg last year.

Rodgers Meadow is one of my favs. in the park. The area E of
Pettit I doubt hardly anyone ventures into. A lot of
that area is pretty open. Worth exploring for sure.
Some have dayhiked Pettit from TM so going into GCT can be
done. Just def. has to be done later in the year...
Now is probably a good time to go since the Wildcat fire I'm
fairly certain burned some of Return and may save some
bush wacking.

Benson can be "easily" circumnavigated. Getting to the top of the
two knobs on the West side is simple also. Haven't gone from
Saddle Horse to Benson yet...
If anyone out there should happen to go up Navaho Pk. (the
pk. N of Benson and S of Piute) can u tell me if the
Registry is still up there. (it's a delicious 3K ft. climb from Benson)

Myself, I plan on dragging the wife down Thompson this year.
(along with prob. 20 other trips...)

Have fun
