Bill,
I didn't get to explore the area as much as I wanted to as we were on a very long loop hike. We left the trail and went upstream (of the Lyell Fork) to the meadow areas and found a very nice campsite. We then had to leave the next morning to keep on schedule.
The alpenglow on the surrounding peaks that evening was incredible...seared in my memory forever!
Whe I got home I found an old picture on the net of Ansel Adams, Georgia O'keefe and friends in the same campsite we were in!
I also had a crazy experience there. We were breaking camp in the morning, thinking how cool it was that we hadn't seen a soul in 2 days, and this old man walks up. He was wearing tattered jeans and an old button up shirt. The only thing he was carrying was a half loaf of bread and a small water bottle. He sad he had just scrambled over the ridge between Mt Lyell and a neighboring mountain. Incredible! We later laughed about seeing the ghost of John Muir!
I definatly want to get back there again and explore that area some more!
