Clouds Rest is 1000' higher and the trail is 2.5 miles longer (1-way) than to Half Dome, if you're doing it from Yosemite Valley. I've never done it--I've always hiked down on backpacks from Clouds Rest to Little Yosemite Valley (LYV). While hike down I always think to myself that I'm glad I'm not going up this way--lots of never-ending switchbacks from LYV. Consider doing it as a overnight backpack.
For dayhikes, I recommend starting at Tenaya Lake off Tioga Road--a day hike is reasonable from there and a lot less elevation gain. The tralihead begins at the west side of Tenaya Lake at a small parking lot. There's no overnight parking now (Autumn) until spring, but day parking is OK.
