Do you know how to hike to this exact spot?

Postby appillar » Tue Sep 29, 2009 5:49 pm

Hi Guys,

I posted a link to the photo but the forum won't allow it. SO....

In Google images search for "muir roosevelt," the first few results show Teddy Roosevelt on left and John Muir on right at the top of a cliff in Yosemite, water falls in background. I've only been to Yosemite once. I recognize the background and I'm thinking this is the top of Half Dome.

I'd like to hike to this exact spot and photograph myself there. Does anyone know how to get there, where I should park, and how long it would take? If so, can you tell me? My ego wants me to search for it myself but I've come to my senses and realize it's much safer to know exactly how to get there.

Also, if anyone knows the exact spot, is it accessible today? I'd hate to get there and find out you can't stand there.

I'd greatly appreciate the help.

Thanks!

I am not positive but I think that is at the top of glacier point. I think this is the spot they took the photo at. There are signs discouraging people from venturing out onto the rock now.

I concur with Wickett. The angle of Yosemite falls looks to be that of Glacier Point. The next lookout that could be similar is along the Pohono Trail, Yosemite falls would be more to the east from there.

And if you've been watching the PBS special on the national Parks, you heard the comment from their guide about the conversations around the campfire that night.

It turns out that they grew pretty heated, as each one liked to talk more than he liked to listen!

Two great men doing a lot of good!

I think that's also the spot where those two women were photographed doing high kicks. Don't think they want you to climb up there anymore...

Hey Guys,

Thanks so much for all the replies. I really appreciate it! Yes, I've been watching Burns' new Nat. Parks episodes. Just incredible!

I've got a similar query, but I have to make 3 legit posts before posting a picture... Is this legit?
I guess after time many people standing on a hanging rock face could erode it somewhat, or make it unstable.
Still, can't you also climb a sheer vertical rockface somewhere round there??

Just put the link for the picture in.

The reason for not allowing people on that one spot is it is right next to the Glacier Point overlook where a lot of people go to. The point really sticks out and a bunch of people clambering out onto it would not be good. Not only because of the added weight but also people moving past each other.
