Other Editions

The first edition is the same as the second, except for three additional chapters in the second edition (11 - 13), an additional illustration, “View of the City of Stockton” in chapter 1, and differing typos in each edition. The first edition, undated, was issued in 1860 and reprinted in 1861, both in San Francisco by Hutchings & Rosenfield. It has 236 pages and 92 engravings and is is bound in brown morocco with blind tooling. The identical second printing (issue) of the first editon (1861) is bound in dark blue cloth stamped with elaborate gilt decoration. The 1865 (third) edition has 292+4 ad pages, and was printed in London by Chapman & Hall. The 1870 (fourth) edition has 292+4 ad pages, and was printed in New York and San Francisco by A. Roman & Co. The 1871 printing has 292+4 ad pages, green cloth gilt lettering. The 1872 and 1876 printings have 292 pages. They may have had ad pages.

Most or all of the engravings in the book are from Hutchings’ California magazine. Many of the chapters are based on articles in the magazine.

The first edition is available on microfiche series Travels in the West and Southwest (Primary Source Microfilm), microfiches 33,518-33,524.

Two other books were later published in the 20th century with the same title, Scenes of Wonder and Curiosity. Ted Orland’s book (1988) has his photographs. Roger Olmsted’s book (1962) reprints content from Hutchings’ Magazine, but is not a reprint of this book (although some articles from the magazine appear in both).
