Rose Schuster was born on Jan. 5, 1863 in Wisconsin. She graduated from University of Wisconsin 1885. She married Henry James Taylor, a professor of Greek, who she met at the University of Wisconsin. Mrs. H. J. Taylor taught school before her marriage and also lived in Sioux City, Iowa. After her husband’s death, she moved to Berkeley, California, and Yosemite Valley. She was one of the founders of the Yosemite Museum and was its librarian and a docent for many years. Besides Yosemite Indians and Other Sketches, Mrs. H. J. Taylor wrote The Last Survivor and other books and articles for the Yosemite Natural History Association. She received the Wisconsin Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award in 1940. She died Jan. 25, 1951 in Alameda Co., California.

A scholarship in memory of Rose Schuster Taylor was established with the Hawaii Audubon Society.

Her son Paul Schuster Taylor was born 1895 in Sioux City, Iowa. he was Professor of Economics at University of California Berkeley and a Guggenheim fellow. He was a leader of the progressive movement and one of the few to protest mass incarceration of Japanese-Americans during World War II. His papers are in the Bancroft Library, which includes the collected writings of Mrs. H. J. Taylor (3 volumes).
